Overview
A Second Officer, also known as a Second Mate, is a licensed member of the deck department of a merchant ship. The second mate's primary responsibilities are navigational, which include updating charts, coordinating navigation, keeping the navigational equipment and publications up-to-date, and reporting to the ship's captain.
